ABOUT THE ARTIST

Grace Johnson is a New York City based contemporary artist whose body of work focuses on abstract oil painting. Johnson explores themes of vulnerability, fracturing, temporality, and tension related to the body and mind, driven by an acute sense of color and perception. Her investigation of this is intimate, drawing upon narratives of her life experience and impressions of the external world.

Having graduated from The New School with a B.A. in Psychology and B.F.A. in Fine Art, her academic background posits an inquiry and research driven process, in attempt to translate the psychic into the physical. Her practice involves a strong focus on materiality, using paint as a vehicle for emotional catharsis and concern for the existential.

Rather than depicting specific subjects, these different collections of reflection and thought are determined by their own language. Her intention is to produce work that prescribes an empathetic exchange between herself and the viewer. In these spaces of interpretation, the viewer themself dives into an encounter with the invisible made visible.
